Children & Astrology
Sep 6, 2026
In Astrology, we refer to 5th House to learn about children in person's life. The sign in 5th house, lord of 5th house, planets aspecting 5th house, Jupiter, Navamsa chart, and Saptamsh chart are usually referred to determine children.
Kalyan Varma, the author of Saravali said that there are 12 kinds of children which a person is destined to have. Although in his commentary, he mentioned about 12 kinds of 'sons'; but in my observation and practice, I would prefer to use the word 'child/children.'
They are:
-
Aurasa: a child born to a lawfully married wife.
-
Kshetraja: one that is born to a wife through a brother or other kinsman of her husband duly appointed to raise up a child for him.
-
Datta: one that has been received as a gift from his natural parents for being adopted (we refer the child as Dattak in normal parlance).
-
Kreeta: a child that has been purchased for the purpose of continuance of a family.
-
Kritrima: a grown up child adopted without the consent of his or her natural parents.
-
Adhamprabhav: an offspring born to a low-caste woman through a person.
-
Gudhotpanna: a child born secretly of a woman when her husband is absent, the real father being unknown.
-
Apaviddha: a child who is abandoned by a father, or mother, or both, and adopted by a stranger.
-
Paunarbhava: a child of a widow remarried.
-
Kaneena: a child of an unmarried woman.
-
Sahodha: a child of a woman pregnant at marriage.
-
Dasiprabhava: a child of a female slave.
In Saravali, he has provided references for each of the above conditions. In some other article, I will try to write those references which lead to any of these above conditions for children.
Today, let me present few cases which had challenges to have children in their lives.
Case 1:
Our first case is 42 years old girl, who married to a divorcee. Six years after their marriage, they have not planned for their child so far.
In D1 chart, there is Saturnian sign (Capricorn) in 5th house. Lord of 5th house is exalted in 2nd house, with Mars (lord of 8th house).
In D9 chart, fiery sign Leo is placed in 5th house. Lord of 5th house is placed in 9th house, again in fiery sign, along with Mars and Venus. Mars is lord of 8th house.
In D7 chart, she has debilitated Venus in 5th house. Lord of 5th house has gone to 9th house, with debiliated Jupiter.
In all three cases, D1, D9, and D7; her 5th house is afflicted badly.
Thus, even after six years of marriage, and at the age of 42, she did not have any child.
Case 2:
The above chart refers to 50 years old man, who did not have any child from his first wife. He married to a divorcee who had two children from her first husband.
In D1, he has Virgo, whose lord has gone to 4th house (12th house from 5th house), with Mars, which is lord of 12th house, and with Venus, which is lord of 6th house. Saturn is having aspect on 5th house.
In D9 chart, lord of 5th house has gone to 8th house, and 5th house is having aspect of Mars.
In D7 chart, he has debilitated Saturn in 5th house, and lord of 5th house is in Saturnian sign in 3rd House.
Thus, in all three charts, D1, D9 and D7; his 5th house is afflicted badly.
In his D1 chart, he has Jupiter in 1st house, aspecting 5th house; he became father to someone's children through his second wife.
Case 3:
This person has two children. One boy, and another girl. He wanted to have third one, and the wife became pregnant. But, the doctor advised to abort due to medical complications and her age. They had different views about having third child, but finally, due to doctors' advice, they aborted the third child.
He has retrograde Jupiter in Gemini in 5th house. Saturn and Venus aspecting 5th house. And, lord of 5th house has gone to 9th house, with Mars and debilitated Sun.
In D9 chart, he has Libra, whose lord has gone to 11th house, in Martian sign, aspecting 5th house. Here, Saturn is aspecting 5th house.
In D7, he has Mercury and Venus in 5th house; and its lord has gone to 2nd house (having aspect of Saturn from 8th house).
In D1, Mercury with debilitated Sun; and in D7, Jupiter having aspect of Saturn; this combination restricted him to have two children.
In next article, I will try to write on cases of adoption and Kalyan Varma's explanation about 12 kinds of children with astrological significance.
